Creating Space for Growth – an impact story

As the manager of an organisation dedicated to enabling equity, wellbeing, and excellence through sport, recreation, and play for people with physical or vision impairments, she has always been driven by purpose. The organisation, founded in 1975, continues to focus on eliminating barriers for disabled people so they can engage and participate fully.

Having stepped into management from an operational role, she carried much of the organisation’s weight on her shoulders. Like many community leaders, she felt stretched and isolated, with little time to step back or think strategically. Most of her energy went into keeping things running rather than nurturing her own growth.

“I’d always known about The Wheelhouse but didn’t have time to get involved before because I was more operational.”

Finding the Courage to Grow

Everything shifted when she joined The Wheelhouse Mentoring Programme. Her mentor encouraged her to see personal development not as a luxury, but as a vital part of leadership.

As the primary caregiver of two young children, she’d struggled to access national programmes that required travel and time away from home. The Wheelhouse’s local, accessible format removed those barriers, allowing her to participate fully — often for the first time.

“What made The Wheelhouse unique was that it was local and the sessions running were during times that meant I could attend without having to travel.”

A Higher, More Strategic View

The Leadership Programme gave her space to pause and reflect — to step out of the day-to-day and view her organisation from a higher, more strategic perspective.

Through shared learning and connection, she realised her challenges weren’t unique — they were shared across the community sector. That sense of belonging transformed her outlook.

“I felt less siloed, and it made me enjoy my role more than I had previously.”

This reflection sparked new energy and confidence to lead with purpose and perspective.

Encouragement and Strengths

Mentoring provided both structure and inspiration. What stood out most was her mentor’s example —

“Even things that challenge my mentor she approaches as learning opportunities. It was nice to be with someone with so much experience yet still learning from failures and not getting stuck.”

Seeing that mindset in action was empowering. It showed her that leadership isn’t about having all the answers — it’s about staying curious, adaptable, and open to growth. That example helped her feel more confident tackling challenges in her own role and encouraged her to bring that same reflective approach into her organisation.

She described the experience as a lovely partnership — supportive, warm, and professional.

A turning point came during the Leadership Series Strengths session, where she began to see and own her natural talents, and felt proud of them.

“Young people like me want to extend our prospects and access professional development opportunities. This has been an excellent pathway to do that.”

Confidence, Optimism, and Collaboration

These programmes built her capability, capacity, and confidence. She developed a stronger sense of optimism and purpose — both personally and professionally.

The group learning environment created connection and inspiration. What had once felt isolating now became a shared journey with peers who understood the same pressures.

“The optimism that’s been reflected from all these things has given me such a nicer perspective.”

She now leads with more creativity, collaboration, and enthusiasm — approaching challenges as opportunities to improve and grow.

A Local Solution with Real Impact

For someone balancing leadership with family life, The Wheelhouse made professional development possible. Its flexibility and accessibility allowed her to engage in meaningful growth without compromise.

She reflected on the bigger picture too — how few opportunities exist for community leaders like her.

“Primary caregivers don’t have opportunities — we can’t travel like others can. Developing professionally is a low priority, but it’s so important.”

Through The Wheelhouse, she found space, confidence, and community — and that growth has extended into her organisation, creating new momentum and optimism for the future.

The Wheelhouse’s Impact

By removing barriers and providing practical, local support, The Wheelhouse helped a young community manager move from operational overwhelm to confident, strategic leadership.

It didn’t just build her capability — it restored her optimism, strengthened her organisation, and reminded her that she’s part of something bigger.

The Wheelhouse’s greatest impact: creating space for local leaders to grow, connect, and thrive.
