In 2025 Manna Youth home supported ten young people, walking alongside them as they move towards independent living. Our approach is to create a supportive community environment where they can practice everyday skills, build confidence, and grow into capable, self-sustaining adults.
Everything we do is shaped by Te Whare Tapa Whā. Through this model, we help each young person strengthen their physical wellbeing by exploring interests that energise their tinana, shift mindsets and engage in learning that supports their hinengaro, and rebuild or uncover a sense of belonging within whānau, even if that is just us for the time being. We also nurture wairua by encouraging deeper connection to the whenua and to the inner spirit that guides them toward a fuller, healthier life.
A standout story from 2025 is that of our longest-standing taiohi successfully transitioned into independent living here in Ngamotu New Plymouth. He came to Manna very unsure if this was somewhere he wanted to be. He was quiet and withdrawn and struggled to engage with new people.
During his time at Manna he completed his level 4 art course, made lots of friends, engaged in a hikoi to the Pouakai hut and became an absolute star tuakana who was the one who confidently connected new people into the whānau of Manna. He was loved and respected.
Upon leaving Manna he had discovered a learning programme that enhanced his natural talents in art, te reo and being able to whakamana learning for those younger than him. It was a perfect fit.
He valued becoming a part of our community and experienced significant growth and learning. When reflecting on his journey, he shared that Manna supported him to achieve many of his wishes and goals and helped him take steps toward the things he had always wanted to do.
While we’re incredibly proud to see him take this next step, we’re just as pleased that he wishes to remain connected to the relationships he built at Manna. His story is a powerful example of how our supportive community can strengthen wellbeing, build the skills needed for confident independent living, and foster meaningful social connection.
